Just a few kilometres from Venice and the beaches of Caorle and Jesolo, around the picturesque town of Portogruaro, lies a land with a long-standing wine-making tradition and wines appreciated around the world. This is the Lison Pramaggiore DOC Wine Route, stretching from the coastal area towards the provinces of Treviso and Pordenone.

Along the way, you can stop at one of the many local wineries, discover the traditions behind these wines and taste some of the area’s typical products. If you are spending your holiday in Caorle, Eraclea Mare or Jesolo, a visit to this beautiful wine-growing region is a wonderful way to experience a different side of Veneto.

A wine tour along the Lison Pramaggiore DOC Wine Route

The wine route takes its name from the village of Lison and the town of Pramaggiore. Wine has been produced in these areas since Roman times, and the tradition continued through the centuries, developing particularly during the time of the Venetian Republic.

But where can you find the highest concentration of wineries today?

If you are planning a wine tasting tour in Veneto, make sure to explore the Classic Area, where the soil is particularly rich in calcium and calcareous clay. This area includes the “Cities of Wine” of Annone Veneto, Pramaggiore, San Stino and Portogruaro.

The entire wine-growing area can be divided into three zones, making it easy to create your own food and wine itinerary and travel from village to village in search of local wineries and flavours.

The Classic Area

Loncon, Belfiore, Pradipozzo, Summaga, Lison, Mazzolada, Levada, Portogruaro and Concordia Sagittaria.

The Livenza Area

Caorle, San Stino di Livenza, Annone Veneto, Motta di Livenza, Blessaglia, Pramaggiore, Pravisdomini, Chions and Cinto Caomaggiore.

The Tagliamento Area

Concordia, Bibione, S. Michele al Tagliamento, Latisana, San Giorgio, Alvisopoli, Teglio, Cordovado, Fossalta di Portogruaro, Vado, Giussago, Villanova, Santa Margherita and Lugugnana.

Discover the wines of Lison Pramaggiore

Here is some useful information about the local wines and typical products to help you plan your wine tour.

Today, the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) designation is awarded to 14 grape varieties produced in this area:

Tocai Italico or Lison Classico DOC, Pinot Bianco DOC, Pinot Grigio DOC, Verduzzo DOC, Chardonnay DOC, Sauvignon DOC, Riesling DOC and Riesling Italico DOC, Merlot DOC, Cabernet Franc DOC, Cabernet Sauvignon DOC, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso DOC, Malbech DOC and Verduzzo dolce DOC.

The wines of the Lison Pramaggiore DOC area are known for their intense aromas and distinctive character. The calcareous clay soils give these wines remarkable body and personality. The wide range of white wines stands out for its freshness and delicate fragrance, while the reds are generally fuller-bodied, offering a pleasant sensation of warmth and softness.

White wines are generally best enjoyed in the year of production, served at 8–10°C. The reds can be aged for two or more years and are best served at room temperature. The grapes used to produce Lison Pramaggiore wines must come strictly from the designated production area covering parts of the provinces of Venice, Treviso and Pordenone.

Conoscere il territorio

A wine tour near Caorle is not only about vineyards and tastings. Exploring this area also gives you the opportunity to discover fascinating places shaped by Roman, Lombard and medieval history.

We recommend visiting the historic centre of Portogruaro, with its arcades and historic watermills, or Alvisopoli, the ideal city commissioned by Alvise Mocenigo. Another fascinating stop to add to your itinerary is Concordia Sagittaria. Here, alongside the many wine bars in the town centre, you can admire Roman archaeological excavations and numerous Roman and early Christian artefacts preserved in the Civic Archaeological Museum.

The area is also dotted with remarkable religious sites. Among them are the Lombard abbey of Santa Maria in Sylvis in Sesto al Reghena and the Abbey of Santa Maria in Summaga, famous for its frescoes.

Another interesting place to visit is Pramaggiore, an important wine centre in Eastern Veneto and home to the Regional Enoteca of Veneto. In ancient times, this area was considered one of the favourite vineyards of the Venetian Republic. Even today, the Lion of St. Mark remains the symbol of the producers belonging to the Pramaggiore DOC Wine Consortium.

And if you are looking for something delicious to taste, there is much more than excellent local white and red wines. We recommend trying Montasio DOP cheese, Caorle moscardini baby octopus, Bibione white asparagus, walnuts from the great rivers and Venetian pears.

During your holiday in Caorle, make sure to taste at least a couple of these traditional local specialities!
