Cycling from Jesolo: The Venice Lagoon and Lio Piccolo

Do you love spending your summer holiday by the sea in Jesolo and are you passionate about cycling? Then this route is perfect for you! Just a short distance from the beaches of Lido di Jesolo, you’ll find the enchanting landscapes of the northern Venice Lagoon – unique places to discover by bike.

A Cycling Tour through the Venice Lagoon

If you’re used to longer bike rides, you can start this cycling route right from the centre of Jesolo and cycle to Cavallino. The distance from Piazza Brescia to Cavallino’s Town Hall Square is just under 8 km, entirely on paved roads and largely along cycle paths.

You can start along the cycle path on the main road (Via Bafile), which runs from Piazza Brescia all the way to the lighthouse. Alternatively, near Piazza Aurora, you can move onto the quieter side road (Via Ceolotto and then Viale Padania).

Take care when crossing the bridge connecting the two towns: it has a cycle path, but it is quite long and can be busy with traffic.

If you prefer a shorter route, you can drive to Cavallino town centre, leave your car there and start cycling from Piazza del Municipio.

From Cavallino’s Town Hall Square, take the scenic Via Pordelio. The road runs alongside the Venice Lagoon and features a spectacular cycle path extending over the water. Along the way, you’ll enjoy beautiful natural scenery, with wide stretches of water and traditional fishing valleys.

Continue along Via Pordelio until you reach Cà Savio. At the roundabout, take the first exit on the right and cross the bridge over the Saccagnana Canal. Continue towards the centre of Treporti, which you’ll reach within a few minutes.

After passing the church, continue along Piazza Santissima Trinità, cross the canal and turn right onto Via Saccagnana. About 1.5 km after the centre of Treporti, you’ll come to a junction. Turn left onto Via del Prà and continue towards Lio Piccolo. This beautiful cycling route takes you through a landscape of fishing valleys, fascinating barene – the low marshy islands typical of the Venice Lagoon – and rustic casoni, the traditional fishermen’s homes.

Reaching Lio Piccolo

As you enter the Saccagnana valley, you’ll come across the small rural settlement of Prà, with its low farmhouses, rustic villa and little church. It’s the perfect place to stop for a while, get off your bike and take a few photos.

The road to Lio Piccolo winds along a narrow strip of land. Here, you’ll feel as if you are cycling right through the lagoon, surrounded by small islands where herons come to nest. After a sharp right-hand bend, the narrow road continues between stretches of water and barene.

The cycling route then reaches the heart of this timeless lagoon village. The road to Lio Piccolo is a dead end, so to return you’ll need to follow the same route back. Before setting off, however, we recommend taking some time to explore the surrounding paths and the more picturesque lanes, such as Via delle Mesole. To return to your starting point, follow the signs for the centre of Treporti and then Cà Savio. After crossing the bridge, take the scenic Via Pordelio again towards Cavallino.

A Few Tips

If you decide to follow this fascinating cycling route, remember to stay alert: some sections run along narrow roads that are open to traffic. You may encounter cars travelling in both directions, especially during the busy summer season.

As you cycle through the lagoon and its more natural and untouched areas, please respect the environment and the wildlife that lives here – especially the many birds that have made these wetlands their nesting and feeding grounds.
