Vallevecchia Nature Reserve and Brussa Beach

Have you ever heard of the Vallevecchia Nature Reserve in the Brussa area?

This protected lagoon landscape lies between Caorle and Bibione, in the beautiful Brussa area. Here, you can admire the evocative scenery of the traditional fishing valleys, walk through the pine forest and relax on a golden sandy beach that is still wonderfully wild and unspoilt.

Vallevecchia is a true 900-hectare island, connected to Brussa by a bridge and surrounded by marine, lagoon and river waters. It is a remarkably unspoilt place and a peaceful refuge for anyone who loves the tranquillity and beauty that only authentic nature can offer.

Along the reserve’s more than 4-kilometre sandy coastline, you can still see the natural sand dunes between the beach and the pine forest. These dunes once characterised much of the Venetian coast. The area is particularly popular with birdwatching enthusiasts and features an interesting nature trail as well as a cycling path.

The landscape is characterised by sandy and clay-rich soil, with saltwater infiltrations. This unique environment is home to the typical wildlife of sandy coastal areas, including many resident and migratory bird species such as the purple heron and mallard. Foxes, hares and roe deer can also be found in the area.

These are the very landscapes that inspired the great American writer Ernest Hemingway, whose novel “Across the River and Into the Trees” was inspired by the beauty of Vallevecchia.
