Another wonderful summer is drawing to a close, and for many of us, it’s time to face the dreaded post-holiday blues. Never heard of them? Then you’re very, very lucky!
Common symptoms can include difficulty sleeping, headaches, changes in appetite, tiredness and irritability. Whatever your job, returning to your usual routine can sometimes leave you feeling a little down. But with a little effort and a few helpful tips, you can make the transition easier and find the energy to face the months ahead with a fresh perspective.
So, it’s time to ask ourselves the big question: What can we do to make the return to everyday life a little easier? Here are a few suggestions…
The key is to take it one step at a time
To keep the benefits of your holiday from being overshadowed by the stress of returning to work, our advice is to ease back into your everyday routine gradually. We’re not machines, so there’s no need to rush. After a holiday, it’s perfectly normal to feel a little out of sorts or tired as you readjust to your usual schedule.
That’s why returning home two or three days before going back to work can be a good idea. Giving yourself a little breathing space between holiday mode and work mode can soften the transition and help you feel calmer and better prepared.
Another simple trick is to set your alarm 10–15 minutes earlier on your first day back, rather than rushing around at the last minute. Take your time over breakfast or give yourself a few extra moments to get ready. Within a few days, you’ll usually find your rhythm again without putting too much pressure on yourself.
Spend time outdoors
Go for a walk, enjoy a little jog in the park or spend your lunch break outside. Make the most of your free time and give yourself the chance to ease gently back into your routine.
During your summer holiday, you probably spent plenty of time outdoors, whether on the beach or surrounded by greenery. Once you’re back home, try not to spend all your time between the office and the house. Whenever you can, get outside and enjoy some natural daylight.
Spending time outdoors can help support your mood and your body’s natural sleep-wake rhythm. And remember, regular physical activity can help relieve stress and improve sleep, too.
Choose a healthy, balanced diet
Yes, eating well can also help you feel better as you settle back into everyday life. Give your body the nourishment it needs by choosing a varied, balanced diet.
Include plenty of fruit and vegetables, along with carbohydrates and other foods that provide the energy you need throughout the day. Avoid overly restrictive diets, which can leave you feeling even more tired and make this adjustment period harder than it needs to be.
Make time for exciting new plans
One of the best ways to make the return home feel less monotonous is to look forward to something new. Give yourself a project, explore a fresh idea or plan something enjoyable to help you switch off from your usual routine.
Why not start by planning a day trip or, if you can, a weekend getaway? Having something to look forward to gives you a new destination to dream about and creates another little break from everyday life.
You could also give your home a fresh look with a few small changes you’ve been meaning to make for ages. Or perhaps it’s time to try a new hobby or pick up a project you had to put aside because you never seemed to have enough time.
A new chapter is beginning and, who knows, it might bring some lovely surprises and rewarding experiences along the way.
We hope these tips help you get back into the swing of things. Once those first few days are behind you, we’re sure you’ll find your energy again and be ready to embrace a new and exciting chapter of your life!
